First performed in 1935 but not officially recognised for another forty years, Porgy and Bess is an American opera that depicts African American life on the fictitious Catfish Row. The opera has attracted as much widespread critical acclaim as admiration for being the first American production to utilise an entirely African American cast as well as contributing such musical standards as Summertime and It Ain’t Necessarily So.
